Evolve Your Grappling at Grindhouse
“The environment stands as a testament to their commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that students from all walks of life not only learn but thrive.” - Aaron Parham, Black Belt
At Grindhouse, we’ve translated two decades of experience with the evolution of the sport into a modern grappling system. We abandoned outdated training methods and shifted to a modern system of learning in a laid-back atmosphere.
With nearly two decades dedicated to the art, our grappling system represents the next step in the progression of grappling arts, built on broad and deep roots that span generations. We've honed our craft in Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling directly from California's Bay Area grappling elite, training alongside and earning black belts under the West Coast's pioneers.
Our reach extends even further; we're actively engaged in a global community of grapplers, coaches, and sports skill development specialists. This extensive, international network means Grindhouse students gain unparalleled access to a truly worldwide grappling network. Give us a state or a country you are visiting and we will recommend a friendly gym for you to visit.
We've taken those decades of experience and crafted a modern approach that integrates Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo into a cohesive system. Forget rote memorization of fancy moves; our focus is on building foundational grappling skills that will serve you from white to black belt.
Grindhouse is a family and female-friendly space where you receive personalized instruction. We prioritize safety and helping each other learn without the emphasis on hierarchies based on belt rank. Our classes are designed to be fully accessible to all skill levels and body types, empowering you to participate, grow, and feel a true sense of belonging from your very first class.

Skill Development
Loved the communication! Made me feel very comfortable and less nervous. - Destini Miller, Brand New Student
Science shows that people learn best when they are having fun, given increasingly challenging tasks, and allowed to experiment with movement. We understand that everyone learns at their own pace and that learning is a messy, non-linear process. Our grappling system is built with these ideas in mind.
Active Learning
In every class, you'll engage in lively practice with friendly training partners. You will develop your own grappling style starting day on day one as you learn effective movement that works for your body type and training goals.
Personalized Feedback
Friendly and approachable coaches give you the attention you need to fine-tune your techniques, correct any mistakes, and make adjustments that work specifically for your body type, physical limitations, and skill level.
Safe Training
We prioritize both physical and emotional safety at Grindhouse. Our top concern is the safety of our training partners, and we value our inclusive, supportive culture. We have a strict no-tolerance policy for aggressive behavior and harassment.
Uniform
Belt Rank
We follow the IBJJF belt rank system. In nogi, we don’t wear the belt during practice or competition.
If you like, your belt rank can be indicated by your rash guard color (Google search for “BJJ ranked rash guard''). Some tournaments require that your rash guard display your rank during competition.
Top - Everyone
A shirt that covers your shoulders, armpits, and torso all the way to the waistband of your shorts or spats.
Long or short sleeves.
Grappling rash guards made of elastic material are recommended because they are made to fit tight, have some stretch, and can be tucked in.
Baggy shirts and ones that are too short to tuck in, and tank tops are not permitted.
Training gear must be free of holes and clean.
Bottom - Everyone
Squat-proof leggings (aka grappling spats).
Grappling shorts that do not expose your glutes.
Jiu Jitsu gi pants.
Shorts over the top of spats for males is encouraged.
No pockets or have the pockets stitched completely shut.
No buttons, zippers or any kind of plastic or metal.
Protective Gear
Mouthguards are required for students with braces on their teeth.
Soft headgear with no hard plastic is allowed.
Cups are prohibited.
Purchasing Uniforms
We suggest that you start with reasonably priced Nogi gear then buy more as desired. Sanabul and Elite sell good quality, ranked uniforms and you can find daily deals on all sorts of training gear at BJJHQ.com.
We sell Grindhouse Nogi gear for kids and adults. Please ask us about special orders if you don't see your size in the Grindhouse online store.
